Christmas should be a hotly contested political issue in our country, but not because of the unimaginative clamoring about whether mega-store greeters should say "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas." Nope, according to Mary (see Luke 1:46-f) the politics of Advent are scarily subversive for folks like me who have lived life on top.
A friend of my wife and me wrote a reflection (link below) that I share as a prompt for thinking along these lines. What if we applied the Incarnation not to the holiday rhetoric in the temples of consumerism but to the pressing crises of morality, justice, and human rights in our day?
Now THAT is an approach to Advent worth sinking our teeth into. Enjoy!
